Whitehall boats have a long history in American Maritime Heritage as workboats and pleasure craft. Although the type was thought to have originated at the foot of Whitehall Street in New York, similar derivations have been built in all regions of the country. The Whitehall is perhaps the most famous of American workboats and is mentioned in all literature relating to the lives of seamen in the days of tall ships. The Whitehalls were used by ship chandlers, newspaper reporters, insurance adjusters, agents, pilots, ruthless boarding house crimps and all others having business with the shipping industry.
